Web Technology 2: Module 1

So I was waived out of Typography class (bummer), and then waived out of Web Technology 1 class as well (HTML/CSS). So I’m sitting in Web Technology 2 class. I’m gonna live blog my classes. So here is Day 1.

Teacher: Julia Debari, of Avenue A | Razorfish.

Here come the First Day introductions. We have to answer how comfortable we are with JS, CSS, PHP, and MySQL. Today’s class is just a brief overview of technologies available, as well as going over what we’ll be doing/learning in class.

Final project is a working web application that uses a database and front end presentation layer. Midterm checkpoint. Along with that, we’ll have three mini projects: drop down navigation, template site, and e-commerce mini site. First part of class looks pretty basic. Setting up a web host (with PHP/MySQL, FTP capabilities, Apache, etc.), getting a text editor, brushing up on HTML/CSS. We’re debating web hosts and setting up accounts (unless we already have an account).

Overview of JavaScript libraries. We’re pulling up jQuery’s site, and looking at examples of what could be done using it. Now we’re discussing YUI, and looking at their examples. Now a discussion of AJAX.

Moving on to other technologies: Ruby on Rails, and the way Model View Controller (MVC) works, and what Agile Development means, and “scrum”.

Going back to JavaScript, we’re looking about JSON now. “name value pairs”. Now back to jQuery. Discussing compressed code vs. uncompressed, as well as obsfucation (not recommended for us). She’s throwing words around like constants and variables and functions and constructs and… well, I hope she starts at the beginning with all this stuff. :) She’s showing us jQuery UI. (Saved for later: jQuery for Designers. Chaining.

If we comment our code, we get extra credit.

Homework is to have web hosting set up (done) and read up on a couple libraries and get familiar with them.

I follow you on Twitter and really enjoy your twits. I think this is an interesting idea you have on live blogging your class and look forward to seeing how it goes. I’m in the midst of refreshing myself on JS and I think I’m in the same boat with you as far as understanding it. :)
